"Turns out parenting doesn’t end when they become "Turns out parenting doesn’t end when they become more independent… the job description just gets increasingly confusing 😂

I’m currently navigating that strange stage where my girls need me less in lots of ways, but I’m also expected to be permanently available should anyone need a lift, food, advice, money, help locating something they definitely haven’t looked for properly… or an immediate response to a message containing only the word “Mum”.

And I’m learning that parenting older kids is a whole new skill.

Knowing when they actually want your advice and when they’re just telling you.

Giving them the freedom to make their own decisions while desperately trying to keep your face neutral.

Giving them space… but somehow knowing exactly when they don’t want space.

And accepting that sometimes you won’t have a clue what’s going on until approximately 14 minutes before it happens. 😂

I do love this stage though. Seeing them become more independent means I’m slowly getting a little more independence back too.

I’m just not entirely sure what I’m supposed to do with it yet.

Especially as apparently my brain has chosen this exact moment to enter its perimenopausal era. Excellent timing. 🙃

Mums of older kids — what would you add to the new job description? 😂

I think this is the bit I'm slowly starting to fig I think this is the bit I'm slowly starting to figure out ❤️

Carys Cakes isn't disappearing just yet , but I am starting to look at the business a little differently.

For a long time I've just carried on doing things because… well, that's what I do. That's what I've always sold. That's what Carys Cakes is.

But between my wrists giving me trouble and another summer spent obsessively checking the weather forecast and worrying about chocolate surviving in the post 🙈, I've started asking myself whether I actually need to keep doing ALL of it.

Maybe winding down doesn't have to be one big decision where I suddenly stop.

Maybe I can keep the bits I still enjoy for a while, change the bits that aren't working for me anymore and see where it takes me.

And chocolate blocks in the middle of a heatwave?

They may be fairly high on the list of things I won't miss 😂🍫

I'm curious though, anyone else reached a point with a job or business where you've thought "I'm only still doing this because I've always done it"?

Well… things are changing around here ❤️ If you'v Well… things are changing around here ❤️

If you've followed me for a while, you'll know I've never been very good at keeping this account just about cakes 😂 If you watch my stories, you've probably heard far more about my life, my girls and my general ramblings than you ever signed up for!

And before anyone panics… **Carys Cakes isn't disappearing just yet!** 🧁😂

I'm still here, I'm still making, and you'll definitely still be seeing cookies and chocolate blocks on this page.

But I do know that eventually I'll be winding this little business down, a number of reasons I am not going into just yet. But lately I've realised that I don't really want to disappear from here when that happens.

Because while the business is changing, life outside of it seems to be changing pretty quickly too.

I'm 49, mum to three girls. My eldest has already spent 9 months on the other side of the world and is now getting ready to head off to uni, my middle one is about to turn 18, and somehow we're rapidly approaching the stage where our lives don't revolve quite so much around raising children.

Add perimenopause into the mix (because obviously 😂) and it feels like I'm entering a completely new stage of life.

And actually, I'm scared and I'm quite excited about it all at the same time 🤣

More time for me. More time for us as a couple. More travel. But also more quiet (maybe). I am sure I will be still needed to answer a message for that 'emergency call' IYKYK.... Figuring out what I actually enjoy doing. Navigating life with almost-grown-up kids. And probably having absolutely no idea what I'm doing half the time.

So for now, Carys cakes is staying, I'm just making a little more room for the rest of my life too. ❤️

No grand plan. No sudden reinvention.

Just me, figuring out what the next chapter looks like.

And hopefully a few of you are at a similar stage and fancy figuring it out with me ❤️
